We think we have the best team out there. Our offices are located in some of the most beautiful locations in Ontario, offering our team members a fantastic lifestyle and a collegial yet challenging work environment.
With a diverse range of seasoned partners, certified specialists and senior counsel, we offer unparalleled opportunities to gain experience and mentorship in a wide range of areas of law. We also have what we think is the best group of Associate Lawyers there is, which provides new lawyers with comaraderie and support. We set up each of our young lawyers for success by providing them with a designated mentor (in their practice area) and “buddy” (outside their department). We provide a competitive compensation package along with budgets for continuing education and business development. We include all of our lawyers in the ongoing strategic planning and direction of the firm, giving everyone a voice in their future. We also provide business development training and coaching, and what we believe to be a rare glimpse into the operations of our firm. We believe that our firm’s ongoing success is dependent upon the input and engagement of our Associates.
“When I initially joined Barriston as a student I saw that there was a culture here amongst my coworkers that spanned beyond the practice of law. There was an underlying commitment to the community that I knew I wanted to associate with as a lawyer.”
Our legal assistants, law clerks, paralegals and administrative & tech staff are hugely important to our team, and we look for the very best. With a culture of exemplary client service, responsiveness and open communication, having the right supporting team members is crucial. We are very proud of the fact that many of our team members celebrate milestones such as 40 year, 35 year and 30 year work anniversaries with us. We offer a competitive compensation package which includes extended health care and pension program. But just as important, we offer a great working environment of mutual respect and “get it done” attitudes. We work hard to include all of our team members when it comes to driving change in the organization, thinking outside the box, and creating efficiencies. The sharing of suggestions and ideas is encouraged and valued.
“Growth is synonymous with Barriston. It’s a physical reality of our expansion throughout Muskoka; it’s a cultural initiative seen in our commitment to this community; and it’s an experience amongst our people, such as myself who started as a summer student before articling and later becoming an associate lawyer.”
Every year Barriston welcomes summer students and articling students to our team. As a full-service firm, with about 34 lawyers and 80 staff from whom to learn, we believe Barriston is an excellent place to apply your knowledge and develop your skills. Summer students will have the opportunity to support many departments, including our admin team. This experience gives students a more complete understanding of how a firm operates at all levels, better preparing them for their future career. Articling students rotate between each of our legal departments over a 10 month term. This valuable experience allows them to build on strengths and weaknesses as well as make an informed decision about which area of law they wish to focus on, after the call to the Bar. Our culture is second to none. Our work ethic, responsiveness, empathy and teamwork are how we provide peace of mind to our clients and each other. With offices across Simcoe County, Georgian Bay and Muskoka, Barriston offers all of the benefits of a larger “big city” firm, surrounded by some of the most beautiful areas of Ontario in which to find that work-life balance.
Please note, summer student applications for 2022 are no longer being accepted.
“I really felt that the firm welcomed me in, gave me experience in a variety of areas of practice, and really showed me what it was to be a law firm.”
Two of Barriston’s Associate Lawyers, Christine Nickel and Jacklyn Tuckey, teamed up with our Articling student, Cassandra Ironside and Summer Student, Alex Cockburn to discuss the journey of becoming a lawyer. In this hour-long virtual chat, the group discussed choosing undergraduate courses, LSATs, applying to law school, studying abroad, taking the Bar exams and so much more. The discussion addressed questions from participants using the different perspectives of our hosts, who all had unique experiences with law school.
